Applied Statistics for Communications, Journalism and Public Relations Department

The course is conducted through an innovative Course Management System called “Moodle” (http://moodle.org/), where students and professors can log in, create forums, schedule assignments, upload and download course materials as well as homework and questionnaires. All the course materials including: Course outline, Assignment guides, online quizzes and the discussion forum can be found on the moodle page (http://moodle.upf.edu/ ) and unfortunately the website is only accessible for the registered students.

Briefly, this course aims to familiarize the students with basic statistical concepts and the SPSS program. The course covers the basic statistics issues starting from the distribution and sampling, descriptive statistics, correlations and ending with inference for simple and multiple regression analysis at a basic level. There is a two-hour practice session every week. These sessions take place in the computer lab where students familiarize with SPSS program using relevant data for their career such as: TV, Radio and Newspaper consumption, children’s attitude towards television program, or social norms and stereotypes…etc. The course is taught in Castillian(Spanish). Reading materials are in English. Students are free to write their exams papers or assignments in Catalan, Spanish or English. The duration of the course is totally 10 weeks.
